But the 4th of July on the island of St. John is much more than just sun, sand and surf. They take the celebration serious and for good reason! This isn't a typical Stateside Independence Day; it's an echo of freedom across an emerald landscape, it's an experience that gets painted new each and every year.

Here's what you can expect when celebrating this patriotic holiday in paradise.

What You Can Expect From Independence Day on St. John

Independence Day on St. John isn't just about fireworks and BBQs (although you'll find plenty of those too!). It's about celebrating the unique history, culture and spirit of the island.

The local Celebrations are traditionally held in colorful Cruz Bay, the main town on St. John. The streets are lined with American flags and red, white and blue decorations, creating a festive atmosphere that is hard to resist. When you step into a St. John July 4th, you're setting foot in a living celebration of history, culture, and unity.

Carnival Traditions

Carnival traditions run deep into St. John's traditional clothing, dyed in the colors of the island's cultural pride. The Carnival Village, a mecca of experiences, is lit up by bright island colors... an appropriate atmosphere for the event that has become so popular with both locals and tourists alike.

During the 4th of July festivities, you'll find that it is centered around Carnival Village, which is located in the Cruz Bay parking lot. Starting early in the morning, you'll find all types of booths open offering arts and crafts from the locals, new and adventurous foods, and of course... a couple of drinks.

It's not just about the food, drinks, and local crafts though, you'll find carnival rides and games throughout the different booths as well. All combined together to create a lively atmosphere.

Lastly, you'll find that there is also a large stage setup for the festivities where musicians perform each night (Yup, you read that right, this is a multi day celebration).

Fire & Feathers Parade

One of the most memorable parts of celebrating the 4th of July on St. John is the traditional parade that takes place in Cruz Bay. This vibrant display features elaborate floats, colorful costumes and lively music as it winds its way through town.

The parade also includes a special appearance from local dancers dressed in traditional Carnival attire, complete with feathers, beads and sequins. You'll find troupes featuring their own style or theme ranging from just a few dancers to large groups (as many as a couple hundred).

This parade is not only a feast for the eyes, but it's also an opportunity to truly immerse yourself in the island's culture and traditions. The parade typically starts around 11 a.m. and should start in Cruz Bay. From there it will go through Mongoose Junction and toward Cap’s Place and the Post Office.

After that, the path leads to the ferry dock, turning left onto the one-way street past Connections. Proceeding up the hill, passing Woody’s, Quiet Mon, and Extra Virgin until reaching the roundabout.

As far as the fireworks go, you'll also find that these are headquartered at Cruz Bay (usually at the harbor).

The Food & Drinks

No 4th of July celebration is complete without delicious food and refreshing drinks. Luckily, St. John has plenty to offer in this department.

The food fair is going to offer everything from traditional Caribbean dishes like jerk chicken and seafood to more classic traditional dishes such as stews, mango tarts, and much more. You'll also find a wide variety of drinks, including local favorites like the mauby and passionfruit juice.

If you're looking for a more upscale dining experience, there are also many restaurants on the island that offer special 4th of July menus and events. From relaxing beachfront vibes to fancy dinners with ocean views, there’s something for everyone.

Battle of the Bands

The steel pan takes center stage as the main instrument for carnival celebrations, where bands come together to perform lively melodies in an exciting competition. This highly anticipated event showcases the top musical groups of the island, engaging in a spirited performance featuring a mix of reggae, soca, R&B, and pop favorites.

Many of the bands also incorporate traditional dance routines into their performances, adding even more energy and excitement to the event. The crowd is encouraged to join in on the fun, dancing and singing along with the bands.

What Makes 4th Of July Special Here

The 4th of July carnival traditions in the Caribbean may seem like a lively feathered party, but they hold significant cultural value. The St. John Celebration has roots in the island's Danish past, where residents marked Emancipation Day with vibrant parades following the end of slavery in the former Danish West Indies on July 3, 1848.

Today, the St. John 4th of July celebration has evolved into a week-long extravaganza of colorful festivities from its humble beginnings as a single-day event. It's a celebration of the island's past, present and future, bringing together locals and visitors in a spirit of unity and joy.

The festivities start on June 30 and last through July 4th!

So if you're planning on spending Independence Day on St. John, get ready for an unforgettable experience filled with culture, tradition, and fun! Just be sure to pack your red, white and blue attire and get ready to celebrate the freedom and beauty of this tropical paradise.
